Nursing Scholarships
There are many options for a nursing student who needs financial aid, though few are as appealing as a scholarship. Scholarships are extended to students by organizations and schools in order to further the education of a promising scholar. Scholarships, like grants, do not have to be repaid. There are many scholarships that are specifically awarded to nursing students, the most popular of which are listed below.
American Association of Critical Care Nurses (AACN) — The AACN awards scholarships to qualifying undergraduate and graduate students who are currently majoring in critical care nursing. Recipients must be a member of the AACN and have a GPA of at least 3.0.
Association of American Indian Affairs (AAIA) — The Adolph Van Pelt Special Fund for Indians Scholarship is awarded in sums of $500 - $800 to qualifying Native Americans. This minority scholarship is given to nursing students based on need and merit.
American Assembly for Men in Nursing (AAMN) — The AAMN supports the cause to enlist more men in the nursing field, as there is a currently a U.S. shortage of nurses and less than 6% of all nurses are male. With the help of Johnson & Johnson, qualifying male students who are currently enrolled in a graduate nursing program are extended $1000.
American Association of Occupational Health Nurses (AAOHN) — The AAOHN offers 15 scholarships each year to qualifying nursing students. Awards are granted in increments of $1000 - $1500, depending on the location of the student.
American Journal for Nurse Practitioners (AJNP) — The AJNP offers annual scholarships to qualifying graduate students who are currently seeking a degree as a nurse practitioner. The sum is $1000 and includes a one-year membership in the ACNP.
American Federation of State, County, and Municipal Employees (AFSCME) — The AFSCME awards $2000 yearly scholarships to qualifying nursing students. Students must be currently enrolled in a full-time degree program and must be the child or grandchild of an AFSCME member.
Akron General Medical Center — The Akron General Medical Center is awarded to qualifying students who are currently enrolled in a participating Ohio nursing school.
The Albert E. and Florence W. Newton Fund — The Albert E. and Florence W. Newton Nursing Scholarship is given to qualifying nursing students who are currently enrolled in a Rhode Island nursing school.
Archbold Medical Center — The Archbold Scholarship Program awards money to qualifying students who are currently seeking a health-related scholarship. Based on need and merit, only those attending college in South Georgia and North Florida qualify.
Clinique Nursing Scholarship Program — The Clinique Nursing Scholarship, in the amount of $6000 is awarded to promising undergraduate students who are experiencing extreme financial burden. Recipients must have and maintain a GPA of 3.5.
Delaware Nursing Incentive Program — This program awards promising Delaware nursing students with renewable full scholarships, not to exceed the cost of tuition, fees and other direct expenses.
ExceptionalNurse.com — The ExceptionalNurse.com Scholarship is awarded annually to a promising nursing student who has a disability. This scholarship is only awarded once to each student.
Foundation for Neonatal Research and Education — The FNRE offers a series of scholarships to both undergraduate and graduate students who are currently specializing in neonatal care. Scholarships are based on need and merit.
The Greater Kanawha Valley Foundation Scholarship Program — This program offers many different scholarships to qualifying students in the West Virginia area. However, the Eleanora G. Wylie Scholarships is specifically awarded to students who are currently enrolled in a nursing or gerontology degree program.
National Black Nurse Association (NBNA) — This minority scholarship is awarded by the NBNA to black students who are currently enrolled in school and who are members of the NBNA. Awards are extended to students based on need and merit.
National Society Daughters of the American Revolution — The DAR, dedicated to the preservation of American history, awards yearly $500 scholarships to qualifying nursing students. Applicants are chosen according to need and merit.
The above are but a few scholarships that are extended to qualifying nursing students in the United States. There are hundreds of nursing scholarships available and thousands of generic scholarships available. Students with a promising academic record should consider applying for as many scholarships as possible.
