The federal government is a major employer in New Mexico, providing more than a quarter of the state's jobs. Many of the federal jobs relate to the military; the state hosts three air force bases. However, New Mexico's nursing programs have been on the rise at a national level. New Mexico has high poverty rates, so health care system in this state seeks to expand its programs with "on the road" dynamics that include immunization for children that is free for those children without insurance.
While New Mexico's capital is located in Santa Fe, the largest number of nursing facilities is located in Albuquerque, this state's largest city. The Presbyterian and Lovelace healthcare systems, both located in Albuquerque, are the two largest facilities. Both systems boast hospital facilities in over seventeen locations statewide. Nurses can also find several hospitals and care centers in Las Vegas, located in San Miguel County.
