According to the Healthcare Association of New York State (HANYS), hospitals and health systems in New York State generate approximately $91.5 billion each year for local and state economies and support more than 644,900 jobs. Those figures represent nearly 10% of the Gross State Product and 7.5% of the total (8.5 million) non-farm jobs in New York State. New York's gross state product in 2006 was $1.02 trillion, ranking third in size behind the larger states of California and Texas.
The number of health care facilities that require nurses in New York is staggering, but the nurse who seeks employment will find the greater number of facilities located in New York City. New York City represents the largest metropolitan area, but medical centers also abound in Buffalo and in Albany, the state's capital. These facilities don't represent the equally numerous geriatric, childhood, military, or other specialized health care operations throughout the state.
