Nursing Schools in Pennsylvania

Pennsylvania's current nursing situation is critical because of the aging population of nurses, with the average age at forty-seven. State legislation aims to continue curbing the nursing work force shortage by banning mandatory overtime, one result of the shortage. Additionally, the faculty shortage in this state perpetuates the shortage of nurses, which educators say poses a particular problem in the Pittsburgh region. This city is second only to the Miami region in elderly population.

While nurses can seek employment at hospitals in Harrisburg, the state capital, and in Philadelphia, the state's largest city, opportunities also exist in places like Pittsburgh, which is home to several medical centers and health care systems. One of the state's largest health systems, The University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC), with several dozen centers, is based in Pittsburgh. Nurses can also find regional systems and specialty facilities throughout the state in smaller cities such as Johnstown.
