The Rhode Island Student Loan Authority (RISLA) currently is offering two programs to lure more students into the nursing and nursing education fields and to keep them working in Rhode Island for at least four years. According to RISLA, the two incentive programs announced in August 2007 "are among the most generous incentives in the country for encouraging and retaining nurses and nurse faculty members." However, to qualify for the employment incentive, an applicant must be a nurse with a master's degree and teaching at one of the state's nursing school programs.
These incentives are just one method that Rhode Island is using to attract and retain nurses for the medical facilities. And, despite nurse shortages, health services are Rhode Islands largest industry, second only to tourism. Most major hospitals and medical centers are located in Rhode Island's major city and capital, Providence. This includes the Lifespan Health System with six hospitals located in Providence and Newport.
