While Pierre is the capital of South Dakota, the major medical facilities are based in this state's largest city, Sioux Falls. Sanford USD Medical Center and Avera McKennan Hospital have been under constant construction over the past twenty years as both have converted residential city blocks into new medical buildings. Both facilities continue to plan more growth in upcoming years.
Sanford plans to build an 18-story research building on 185 acres. This building will house Sanford's advanced research projects and attract major biomedical firms to the city. Avera also is looking to expand its genetics and pharmacology research capabilities, based at the behavioral health center. While the majority of major medical care that requires nurses is based in Sioux Falls, the nurse could find employment opportunities in cities such as Brookings, Rapid City, and even in Deadwood at the Northern Hills General Hospital.
