For the sixth time in seven years, Vermont ranked number one in the nation as the healthiest place to live in 2007. This state can boast low teenage birth rate, strong health coverage, the lowest AIDS rate in the country, and more. Yet a 2005 survey found that 79 percent of the 5,800 nurses then working in Vermont were over 40, and nurses over 60 outnumbered those 30 and younger.
While this need has spurred Norwich University to expand its nursing programs, few medical centers are located in that city or in the capital city of Montpelier. Bennington, Vermont's largest city, maintains two major medical centers. Other cities where nurses could find employment include Burlington, Berlin, and Windsor, among others. Despite the fact that few major centers exist in Vermont, the Vermont Department of Labor currently projects 272 openings a year for registered nurses through 2014.
