Nursing Schools in Virginia

Virginia's Gov. Timothy M. Kaine announced a scholarship program in summer 2007 that encourages master's and doctoral nursing students to teach at this state's schools upon graduation. This effort is meant to address a shortage of nursing faculty at Virginia's colleges and universities, which in turn has helped to create a shortage of nursing students in the state.

Surprisingly, Virginia's largest city, Virginia Beach, has only one major hospital and one major hospital system, Sentra Healthcare, with medical centers located in Virginia Beach, Williamsburg, Norfolk, Hampton, and a smattering of smaller locales in western Virginia. Richmond, the capital city, has far more opportunities for the nurse who seeks employment. One place that should not be overlooked is Lynchburg, a city that has recently expanded an existing hospital, and that is building new clinics to care for those who don't carry insurance. A few opportunities exist in the Roanoke-Salem area as well as in Fairfax.
