Washington State Hospital Association recently reported that the scarcity of nurses and other health care workers is threatening the ability of the state's hospitals to provide good care. Latest statistics across the state show vacancy rates range from 2 percent in Eastern Washington to 10 percent in the Seattle area, the largest city in the state. With approximately 1,000 nursing positions vacant, Washington ranks 32nd of 50 states in supply of nurses.
Seattle houses approximately fifteen major medical facilities, including a cancer center and several health care systems. The largest system, Providence Health System, maintains medical centers in Seattle, Centralia, Chehalis, Everett, and Olympia. The capital city, Olympia, includes two major medical facilities outside the Providence system. Nurses who seek employment should not overlook population centers such as Spokane, Walla Walla, or Tacoma, where the nurse can find general care hospitals, special needs facilities, and research possibilities.
