While the nursing shortage has affected Washington D.C.'s medical facilities as well as the rest of the nation, the fact that the nation's capital is home to only thirteen major medical facilities makes competition fierce. Instead, the nurse who wants to work in this area may look regionally to Maryland, where Baltimore offers many opportunities thanks to a severe nursing shortage in that area. Maryland hospitals are short of nurses again after two years of declining vacancies, and the facilities with the biggest nursing shortages are in Montgomery and Prince George's counties and in the Baltimore area.
Washington D.C. is home to the famous Walter Army Medical Center, Georgetown University Hospital and its medical center, and the George Washington Hospital and its medical center. Other opportunities for nursing employment include alcohol and drug rehabilitation, nursing homes, doctors' offices, and clinics.
