While West Virginia faces shortages in nursing care and in nurse educators, they are also ahead of the curve in its work to create a statewide system for exchanging health information. The "Mountain State" not only is a key player in the national health information network architecture, but it has advanced health care with personal responsibility programs, health systems improvement, applied technology, a stronger Medicaid program and enhanced medication management.
Nurses who seek employment in West Virginia will find more medical facilities in Morgantown than they would in Charleston, the state's capital and its largest city. Nurses might also look to Bluefield, Beckley (near Charleston), and Huntington to find work. The state's largest health care system, Health South, has a surgery center located in Huntington, with other specialized medical centers situated in that city and in Morgantown, Bluefield, and Parkersburg. Morgantown also is home to the Healthcare at West Virginia University system.
